Polar night
November to January
Blue light around midday and the first good ski weeks. For a few weeks around Christmas the sun stays below the horizon.
Snow from late autumn to early May, then weeks of midnight sun. Here is what each season is like from the cabins.
The year at Levi
Lapland changes more between seasons than almost anywhere in Europe. Pick the light first, then the cabin.
November to January
Blue light around midday and the first good ski weeks. For a few weeks around Christmas the sun stays below the horizon.
February to April
Long bright days on deep snow: the best weeks for cross-country skiing, with nights still dark enough for the aurora.
Late May to July
The sun does not set. Fell walks, fishing and paddling, and a swim after the sauna at any hour.
September
The fells turn orange and gold in a couple of weeks, and the northern lights return as the nights darken.
Winter
Snow usually covers the ground from November to early May. Days are short before Christmas and long by March, and temperatures can fall below −25 °C, so the drying cabinet and the sauna earn their place.
Summer
From late May to July the sun circles the sky without setting. The snow goes, the birches come into leaf and the fells open for walking. Mosquitoes are busiest from late June, so pack repellent and enjoy the evenings on the terrace anyway.
